1) Assistant
ASUnix is looking for assistants during the 2009-2010 fall and spring semesters. Summer semester is also a possibility, however please contact staff first before applying for that.
We
provide unix workstation and departmental server support for faculty and
researchers in Arts, Sciences and Engineering, with the exclusion of EECS
who have their own dedicated staff. All versions of unix are
supported including irix, freebsd, tru64 but most work is concentrated
around solaris and linux (mandrake, suse, gentoo, debian, redhat, fedora).
Skill set should include a solid background in any version of unix as well
as being detail oriented with a strong desire to follow up all aspects of
user requests, trouble tickets until completed in a timely manner. Knowledge
of or interest in learning standard, accepted system administration,
security and support practices is also important. Additionally, one will be
asked to schedule certain times of day to answer end-user requests in order
to provide reliable, predictable levels of service. It is an absolute must
that you be a motivated, self-starter. Being a regular desktop linux user will also help.
This position will be a mix of fulfilling end-user requests and working on projects. Additionally work also needs to be done on support documentation so please
be prepared for that.
Hours vary from between 5-15 hrs/week during the regular semester, depending on your schedule and
availability. If you are interested in working with linux, providing linux
support we can work with you on hours. Possibility for part time and full
time work during the summer.

projects include building Tufts customized web browsers (mozilla, firefox),
email clients (pine, mozilla mail), as well as customized gnome, kde
environments for inclusion in Tufts specific distributions of Redhat and Mandrake.

be prepared for that.
Hours vary from between 30 and 40 hrs/week. depending on your schedule and
availability. For interns from outside of the area you are encouraged to spend some time exploring and finding out all that New England offers.
